The Divorce Mistake Nobody Talks About

By: Leonidas "Leo" Bezanis II | Partner, Beermann LLP

Most people think divorce mistakes involve money.

Maybe it's hiding assets.

Maybe it's refusing to negotiate.

Maybe it's making emotional decisions about the house.

Those mistakes happen.

But one of the most common—and most overlooked—mistakes happens long before anyone steps into a courtroom.

It's making the divorce public.

When someone first learns their marriage is ending, the natural instinct is often to seek validation. Friends want details. Family members want updates. Social media offers an instant audience.

For a moment, it can feel helpful.

Unfortunately, it can also create problems that follow people throughout the entire case.

I've seen situations where family members become deeply involved in disputes that should remain between spouses. I've seen well-intentioned friends offer advice that escalates conflict instead of resolving it. I've even seen public posts become evidence in litigation.

The reality is that every person you bring into the conflict adds another voice, another opinion, and another layer of emotion.

Meanwhile, the legal issues remain the same.

Parenting schedules still need to be negotiated.

Assets still need to be divided.

Financial decisions still need to be made.

The people who tend to navigate divorce most successfully are not necessarily the people who are least emotional. Divorce is emotional by nature.

Instead, they're often the people who remain focused on the outcome rather than the audience.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't seek support. In fact, having trusted support systems can be incredibly valuable.

It simply means being intentional about who is helping you move forward and who may be unintentionally keeping you trapped in the conflict.

Before sharing every detail of your divorce, ask yourself a simple question:

"Will this help me reach a resolution, or will it make resolution harder?"

The answer can have a bigger impact than many people realize.

Clear answers. No noise. Just the law — made simple.
